Rd 1: Bye Turned in my store champ bye and watched one of the other members of Sioux Falls: TEAM PUPPYGIRL play his game.

Rd 2 Vs Andy Dahl – for the second year in a row, I end up paired with my old Star Trek CCG playing friend Andy early in the event. For the second year in a row, I win in a really close game. Andy was playing Snoke/Thrawn without the grand moff tech. At the end of the game, his thrawn was dead and snoke was on 1 damage while Jyn and cassian were also on 1 damage. It all came down to if snoke re-rolls into a 2 indirect he wins, if he doesn’t, I retreat ftw. I asked him about playing the deck after the errata and he said he’d put so many hours into prep with the deck he just didn’t want to come off it.

Rd 3 vs John Magnussen - He was playing a Yoda/Chewbacca action cheating deck that special chained into big damage with the plan of using vaders fist sides and shadow caster sides against their owners. I just ran through his deck with all my discards and mill effects but in the second to last round I pitched what was left in my hand to draw a fresh 5 to continue to try and find either of the two copies of easy pickings I still hadn’t seen that I knew I needed to hold him off and he was able to kill my Cassian instead of me making him discard the last few cards in his hand. Close game. If I had drawn either easy pickings at any point in that game its even closer.

Rd 4 vs Julius Tucker – Julius and his dad are both originally from Sioux Falls as well they said (oddly enough another member of TEAM PUPPYGIRL was playing vs the dad this rd in what would end up being the most viewed match as everyone else got done and they were duking it out in a round that went 15 min past time being called). Anyway, Julius was running an aphra deck which then made my job even easier for milling it out since he drew a lot of bonus cards. I also the EMP grenades, surgical strike and vandalize in the deck for the shadow casters and vaders fists I expected to see, but they worked here well too knocking his triple 0 off the board twice while Jyn’s ability found and removed both of his climate arrays.

Rd 5 vs Nic Blonigan - Nice guy who was playing the new DADDYPANTS VADER ™ with a Jawa and trying to just deal heavy swings of lightsaber damage with vader. I was able to keep him check for pretty much the entire game. But then in the second to last round he just had this crazy GAWD ROLL where force speed’ to take two actions, he re rolled vader and his weapon and hit a 11 damage off the 3 dice, which he used to kill Cassian totally from left field. Worst part was that I was about to drop a second chance on Cassian just in case….but it wasn’t meant to be…and I took the loss. I feel very confident that had I been able to get the second chance on cassian I win this game since he was down to just 2 cards in hand at the end of the game.

Rd 6 vs Nick DeWeert – Another cool guy it was fun to play against. He was playing Snoke/Bazine/Ciena to drop big vehicles. I look at my first 5 and just keep the whole thing because it was exactly what I wanted: retreat, jump, emp grenade, defensive position, scrap heap. Right from the beginning the emp grenade had him totally under control. In the first 3 rounds the grenade and my removal just wouldn’t let him have enough money to get going and as a result this game wasn’t even close. He dealt 6 total damage to me the entire game.

Rd 7 vs Nick Hoover – Nick game number 3 in a row! Nick was playing 2poe/Han3 and just action cheat damage so that you cant mitigate it. It was a very solid deck and this was my only game of the day that wasn’t either a win, or really really close. I mulliganed for my hit and run/commando raid but I never saw either after either the mulligan or the entire game for that matter so I was never able to limit his re-rolling into extended damage. He just rick rolled me hard with a solid opening hand and rolls that were certainly not outliers. The deck and player just played out solid and it was over quickly.

So after the 7 rounds of swiss, the reality was that my SoS was the 2nd highest of all the 4 win players so I took 13th. Sucky part, is that had I won, I’m not sure if I would have made top 8. My sos was .6 (the exact same as the person who ended up 9th) – but that was based on my last rd opponent having the win, and if he doesn’t, I think I end up as the 9th place person because the guy I played rd 6 also lost his rd 7 which is what I think would have been the difference. So I’m thinking that I was already not in control of my own destiny going into rd 7. Womp womp.

Bottom line is that I and the rest of Team Puppygirl had a great time at a well run event playing this fun game. it was also good to see a more wide open meta than the previous weeks....
