Kylo Ren - Vader's Disciple is not considered a great character. He has enabled some competitive pairings based on his cost, but no one has really considered him an anchor character. And in my opinion this is mainly because his special is so hit or miss. Pull a zero cost card and you feel cheated, pull a 4-6 cost card and it almost feels OP. Enter Nute Gunray, his ability allows for us to potentially choke resources passively, which means that an opponent is keeping more expensive cards in their hand. Mother is their for consistency. Between Nute and Mother Kylo has never been focused first, even after a force upgrade or two.

I'm interested, when using Mother Talzin - Nightsister Matriarch's ability to turn a die, if you use it on a Kylo Ren - Vader's Disciple die are you going for the or ?

I run Kylo Ren with Thrawn (Elite versions of both) as I get alot of hand knowledge and hand removal from Thrawn so Kylo's special hits more consistently.

Debaticus 2

@Ir0N how does that deck work for you? I've tinkered around with a couple variations on it but have yet to actually pull the trigger and test one out yet.

Ir0N 1

@Debaticus It hits incredibly hard and fast. I was very much surprised by its quickness. And the pair can lend themselves to 2 different play styles, control or aggro.

You will have staples in both deck types (2x Crossguard Lightsaber, 2x Crafted Lightsaber, 2x Probe are great in both styles). I also always have Kylo Ren's Lightsaber as it just feels right (and I do not own Maul's Lightsaber) for some late game hitting.

Probe + Thrawn's ability is a killer combination. You have a very good chance to win the initial roll off since 2 sides of Thrawn's die has a 2 and Kylo also has a 2 side on his die. On average I roll out a 6, sometimes more, sometimes less.

If you are running an Agro version, I recommend having 13-15 weapon upgrades and the rest that are events that can help getting consistent damage. I also always recommend going first if you are going Agro.

If you are going more control, you dont need to go first, but it depends on who you are facing and what you have in your starting hand.

I always try to have a Probe and Crossguard Lightsaber in my starting hand.

Example --

I was facing not too long ago, an ePhasma/eBoba deck. Immediately I knew that they would be aiming for a 2 cost upgrade (like Jetpack, Holdout Blaster, Hidden Blaster, etc. in their hand. I won the roll off, went first and immediately activated Thrawn.

I rolled and declared '2' as my number. I saw in his hand a Jetpack, Slave I and 3 random events. Boom Jetpack was no more. My following action was to play probe and hit 2 of his events. He was now down to 2 cards in hand, I have yet to roll Kylo or use my resources and he was forced to discard to reroll. He discarded his last event. He had 1 card in hand and I knew exactly what it was and what it costed. I played my Crossguard Lightsaber on Kylo, did 1 damage to Phasma.

He resolved his dice and did some damage. However my Thrawn rolled 2 and 1 and my Kylo rolled 1 and 1 with his character die and 1 with Crossguard Lightsaber

By this time he has claimed the battlefield, I resolved Thrawn's to change both Kylo's character die to and Crossguard Lightsaber to special, used all 3 specials and killed Phasma turn one.

Thrawn's stopped him from playing Slave 1. He played an upgrade (I forget what it was), and I activated Thrawn, declared the number 4 and discarded his Slave 1.

@Ir0N you have renewed my faith in trying that combo out! Who do people typically target first from what you've seen?

Ir0N 1

@Debaticus Another thing I found is Thrawn can generate a ton of resources since his resource side is +2. I have had many a game where I have played both Crossguard Lightsaber and Crafted Lightsaber on Kylo turn 1, making for a monster turn 2.

Ir0N 1

@Debaticus the nice thing about this pairing is that since its not popular, many peoiple havent played against it and have no idea how. In my experience if they target Kylo Ren - Vader's Disciple first, it can cause some issues. But if they start down that path, you can throw all your upgrades on Thrawn and still continue to wreck face.

It mostly depends on the cards you are running. My control version of Thrawn - Master Strategist, Kylo Ren - Vader's Disciple revolves a lot around 'Spot a blue character' for my control events. So when I am running that, I usually defer, take both shields and place them on Kylo to make Thrawn a more "tasty" target to focus on.

Ir0N 1

@Debaticus The one thing I do heavily stress to use when running Kylo/Thrawn, is to HAVE A NOTEPAD!! Write down every card you see in his hand with Thrawn's ability and what their cost is. Hand knowledge is power and it is soooo strong.

Plus there are so many times you will look at the hand, pick out the card and forget the rest you saw.

Debaticus 2

@Ir0N I've wanted to pair Thrawn - Master Strategist with blue to use As I Have Foreseen. Is that a card that made your list or you considered or do you find it would be more of a luxury card for the deck?

The notepad would be great if you could take notes in tournaments but since note taking is a no no I will have to trust to my memory, which is definitely something I need to work on with this game lol.

Ir0N 1

@Debaticus why you cant take notes like in the other TCG at Tourney's I will never understand.

I personally dont use As I Have Foreseen in 1v1 since Thrawns ability basically is that card with an added discard bonus without taking a slot in your deck.

It might be worth using if you are playing 2v2 or a FFA, since you can look at every enemies hand with As I Have Foreseen. You are basically using Thrawn 99% of the time to get rid of upgrades (usually 2 or 3). So those are really the only 2 numbers I call.

Use Probe and Probe Droid to take care of his events in his hand.

Debaticus 2

@Ir0N I've always wanted to do the As I Have Foreseen play with Thrawn's ability to get the slam dunk on his activation but whenever I've done any deck building with it it's felt more like a luxury that doesn't make the cut.

Ir0N 1

@Debaticus I guess you could run 1 copy in your deck and hope you get it in your opening hand. But I wouldn't run 2. In Agro you will have cards you need in the deck and same with control.

In my agro deck I run 1 Three Steps Ahead and 2 Tactical Mastery and 2 Enrage. I might try removing 1 Enrage to add 1 As I Have Foreseen, but it will difficult for it to consistently make the cut since Enrage is so good at getting out those big upgrades right away, like a Kylo Ren's Lightsaber, or a Maul's Lightsaber or a Force Throw

Debaticus 2

@Ir0N I haven't looked at this combo since legacies came out so it's much less likely to make the cut in my deck now lol.

Ir0N 1

@Debaticus And to be totally honest, I have never been in a match where I felt like I needed to play a card to see their hand before activating Thrawn.

Of course, playing Thrawn/Kylo is very dependent on game knowledge. If you are familiar with the deck you are facing and the big cards they use, it is easier to hit your discards rather than facing a deck that you have no idea what they would be using.

Toeko 72

@debaticus - It honestly depends on what I need, I would say I prioritize specials over his melee damage. But I have no hard fast rule on it, and there are a decent amount of times I’ll use Talzin to turn a die to a resource if I don’t roll any.

@Ir0N - I might have to give that a shot. My favorite awaking deck was Kylo w/ 2 Nightsisters so to me this is that decks natural progression.
