After (finally) pulling my fourth X-Wing, I decided to throw this together for a Standard Tournament the next day. We played four rounds of Swiss with twelve players coming from a wide range of experience levels.

Matchups for me went like this:

Round 1

vs. Val - Headstrong Renegade & Rebel Traitor x 2 at Landing Dock - Scipio

This game was really close. I arrived late and our host graciously allowed the game to start even though we only had about 20 minutes of play time, so I was forced to play a grindy support deck at max speed! The shop owner was my opponent, so the game was briefly interrupted a few times, so misplays and forgetfulness probably applied to both sides.

I ramped hard the first few rounds with great draws and was able to focus into plenty of resources to draw even more vehicles to play. Resistance Crait Speeder was my work horse for even more resources using its +1 on resolution ability to pay for another support, and I was able to maintain battlefield control easily by playing a vehicle after my opponent had claimed.

The Traitors forced me to roll out my characters, which didn't prove to be that big of an issue. I used Respite both of my first two rounds on the Gungan Warrior, but an early Shock Collar and hot Val dice wore down Lor San and L-3 pretty quickly. Some super nasty Déjà Vu + Act Of Cruelty combos caught me off guard and pumped out enough damage to kill off everyone but the Gungan.

The support death ball did it's work though, and three X-Wings + Attack Formation gave me some deadly 6 damage plays. I barely won with 2 health left and 30 seconds left on the clock.

1-0

Round 2

vs. Wat Tambor - Techno Union Foreman, Doctor Aphra - Artifact Hunter, Sentinel Messenger, and Double Down at Landing Dock - Scipio

I was once again able to ramp hard this game, but damage was slow the first few rounds as my opponent (and good friend!) expertly mitigated most of my focus dice. Luckily for me, most of his damage was indirect, which led to a shiny new L3-37 - Droid Revolutionary mod for one of my starfighters, as if she'd never left the board!

Card draw and resources led to a seriously bloated board state on my end, while my opponent mostly drew into mitigation instead of the supports he needed. Attack Formation popped a surprise six damage onto Aphra mid-game, and after that it was just a matter of cleanup.

2-0

Round 3

vs. Leia Organa - Heart of the Resistance, Anakin Skywalker - Podracing Prodigy, & Lor San Tekka - True Believer at Landing Dock - Scipio

This was one of my biggest concerns for the evening - Mill. Even worse, it was piloted by one of my buddies who had just come back from the Denver GQ! Lor San Tekka - True Believer can help with this matchup a little, but I kind of figured that I should just go with my normal game plan of draw and spam as many dice as I could and not worry about milling myself by drawing too much. (Also, Fond Memories was my tech safety net)

Two early Tech Teams helped me get an edge for the resource curve, but I lost R2-D2 and an X-Wing right off the bat. Round one ended with an N-1 Starfighter and a Resistance Crait Speeder on the board for me, and a Resistance Ring and Anakin Skywalker's Podracer on the board for him.

He was routinely shredding my dice with mitigation, but I managed to naturally roll an N-1 Special (so the die was safe from Into The Garbage Chute and Crash Landing etc.) to get rid of that podracer relatively early on.

I watched in horror as my X-Wings wound up in my discard pile one by one after a double No Answer (that darn Resistance Ring!) but this actually ended up working in my favor because my other supports wound up on the board in pairs, which meant they were safe from Flames of the Past.

Attack Formation ended up being clutch in this game, since even without getting a huge bonus as it would have from the X-Wing squadron, it still allowed for some +2 damage plays on the Resistance Crait Speeder dice. Ultimately though, it was Fond Memories that saved the day and bought me the extra round I needed to close out the game. I managed to win with one card left in my hand.

3-0

Round 4

vs. Captain Phasma - Stormtrooper Commander & Mother Talzin - Nightsister Matriarch at Landing Dock - Scipio

I won the roll-off again (Five dice rolled more than three dice could, although just barely this time.) I knew that this was probably not going to go well for me, since my deck is slow and only has 24 health. Phasma decks on the other hand pump out heavy amounts of consistent damage immediately, and this particular flavor of Phasma has plenty of defensive measures to keep the dice coming. Even worse, my opponent has been running this deck frequently for the past few weeks, and she has made a few modifications that ensure it gets even more dice on the board faster than its original version.

Ramp round 1 was disappointing. All I had on the board was Decoy, Suppressive Fire, Tech Team, and a single X-Wing, which didn't roll damage. On the other side of the table, she had a Punch Dagger a Conscript Squad, a Tech Team and had revealed a Vader's Fist that I knew would be drawn for round 2. Lor San took a single damage and L-3 Decoy'd the other 3.

She resolved another resource round 2, putting her at three resources. I figured I had time before that Fist hit the table, but she surprised me by slamming down Megablaster Troopers instead. (An even card!!) She proceeded to roll her eight dice onto the table which, after some feeble attempts to Battlefield Power Action Reroll and Suppressive Fire mitigate from me, ended up showing 11 damage.

Decoy only works on a single source, so I could force two damage onto L-3. The other 9 took Lor San off the board.

I dealt negligible damage to Phasma's shields or something, but the game was pretty much over at that point. We played it out though, and she finished off the Droid and the Gungan both in round 3.

3-1

Aftermath

Truth be told, this played out better than I had expected. The obvious goal is the get out the X-Wings and go to town with focused range damage, and the way I try to get there is to just draw cards all day (Grand Design, Respite, Renewed Purpose, R2-D2,) and hopefully be able to pay for said cards.

What I didn't anticipate was how well the deck can do even without all of the X-Wings on the table. Crait Speeders are solid, inexpensive vehicles, and the N-1s proved quite versatile with their 2 shield and special sides.

Unfortunately for me, any damage from my character dice is pretty much laughable, (It's just the Gungan, whom I usually exhaust for Respite anyway) so until those ships hit the table I'm slowly just trying to build my fleet.

Running minimial mitigation probably wasn't super wise, but I just really wanted to see those X-Wings all on the table together and was excited to see what they could do. (This dream was never realized though - games ended the time I had three - or none)

Overall, is it good? Probably not. I think I got lucky. Was it fun? Absolutely. Will I play it again? Probably not this version, but with a little tinkering, I felt like I could maybe be onto something! I felt sort of like playing Yoda/Hera/Maz again, which was a deck I really enjoyed back before rotation.

Cards I'll likely cut:

Now, if I can just make a version with more health somehow...
