How good is General Rieekan - Defensive Mastermind? I think this decks is tier one!

People are already going through most of their deck each game so its really only like 10 - 15 we need to mill. Easy.

Three colours seems to be a great choice right now with Kylo Ren - Tormented One dominating the field. The Thrawn - Master Strategist match up is a little difficult but nothing you can't improve on with lots of practice (its very unforgiving, Forethought is very rewarding ).

The basic goal of the deck is to mitigate damage whilst you mill your opponent. We also want to be going through all our cards each turn vs anything that can’t mill us. Most of our cards have similar effects so holding cards for later is rarely relevant. This also ensures we have the highest chance of finding All Quiet On The Front to end the game early.

Against Thrawn - Master Strategist you need to be careful with your cards. Upgrades need to be played immediately. Claiming to get an opportunity to play All Quiet On The Front or Friends in Low Places can be game changing (plan your turns). We are largely only concerned with early crime lord plays. It very hard for them to hold onto a Buy Out for a good Moment.

Battlefield: We almost always want starting shields; Command Center - Lothal will usual get us this and in some match-ups it lets us play a more aggressive strategy. ie. Vs Thrawn or Hera decks.

Starting hand: Always mull: All Quiet On The Front and Entrenched Always keep: Confidence, Krayt Dragon Howl, Scout & C-3PO

Ideal turn: Characters: Gain 2 shields, Mill 2 with Padme and Rieekan. Roll instructor last. Use scouts + C-3P0 for additional mill. Chain Luke’s protection + fearless combo. Prioritise removing dice that cause the opponent to re-roll. This will help us mill them. We want our opponent to spend resources and cards removing our dice. So you can leave big dice in the pool longer than usual.

Tips:

  • Luke protection + Fearless is a great combo vs any aggro deck.
  • Scout and C-3P0 are import late game to get the last few cards out of their hand.
  • You can confidence crime lord special to remove the dice if they can pay for it.
  • I usually wouldn’t recommend keeping Luke’s Protection without Fearless.
  • Padme is the most important character past turn 3. putting upgrades elsewhere can be a good option.

I recently piloted this to a 6-2 finish at Australian Nationals. Missing top 8 on breakers. Big thanks to General Games for running the event and providing great coverage as always.

I love decks like this, and I will def build this and try it out! im just curious about the Confidence play on Crime Lord.. wouldn't that just have him defeat one of your characters at end of the round? or you doing that do avoid a Buy Out play?

@Spartanlife74 - I am not positive, but I think it was meant to read "You can confidence crime lord special to remove the dice if they can't pay for it." Essentially, get rid of the die before they get the resources to pay for it.

In my experience against Thrawnkar they will get the resources to pay for it, so removal before that happens makes sense.

Spankatank 1

@Spartanlife74 I'm thinking he meant to write "if they can't pay for it" to remove the die, in case they are in the situation that they are showing the die and need to get the resources first?

Spartanlife74 1

ok I understand, but Confidence doesn't remove the die if they cant resolve it, unless they errata'ed the card recently

Spankatank 1

@Spartanlife74 Good Point haha

Spartanlife74 1

@Spankatank oh whew thought I was missing something! still a good deck with lots of promise!

fiferboy 57

@Spartanlife74, @Spankatank - Confidence forces the opponent to resolve a die if able. The opponent is always able to resolve the Crime Lord die (there is no condition that would allow the special not to be resolved), but sometimes they are unable to pay for the effect.

Using Confidence on Crime Lord will result in the opponent (with fewer than 5 resources) having to resolve Crime Lord special but they will not be able to defeat one of your characters. It is a very good, if somewhat situational, play.

Spankatank 1

@fiferboy Interesting, so are blanks the only things that aren't "resolvable"?

fiferboy 57

@Spankatank Or if the die side has a resource cost on the side itself (like a 2 for 1) and they don't have the resources. They can't resolve it if the payment is part of the resolution cost but they can resolve it if the payment is part of the effect.

@fiferboy oh wow I had no idea! Thanks for the clarification! Really good to know

I have put together nearly the same deck haha! 4 cards different atm

-1 Scout -1 Maz -2 Electroshock

+2 Hyperspace Jump +1 New Orders +1 Flex spot (currently block in my meta)

stranglebat 832

Also how do you feel about Inner Peace as a soft wipe that will cause the opponent to reroll?

Scales 638

When I saw this character combination make it into the 6-2 bracket, I had to play around with it!

One key change I would make is finding space for at least 1 Hyperspace Jump - the amount of games I've won with this card is phenomenal.

A lot of blue decks run Ancient Lightsaber, and when your opponent plays both and thinks "I've won! I'll just keep cycling the lightsaber and you can't mill me" only to end the action phase prematurely with no cards in hand or deck, is amazing!

@stranglebat

At Peace Could be alright; especially against the decks trying to roll out fairly.

Mind Trick was actually one of my last cuts. I came to the conclusion that I needed more answers to Thrawn naming 1, into Crime Lord. Ended up going with Loth-Cat and Mouse instead. it had the added benefit of not being shut off by Salvage Stand.

its also nice to have spare resources for Padme Amidala - Queen of Naboo.

@fiferboy Thanks for clearing up the play with Confidence.

Would you recommend Feint as a way to double up on Rieekan's ability?

Tybrid 922

Did you try Protective Mentor?

Telimtor 1

Luke's Protection is "blue character" only, don't think it works great here.

Epro 572

I dunno about Luke's Protection. Being only able to hit blue kinda sucks. Chance Cube is a must. Same with Hyperspace Jump.

Zonexir 1

Spy Net can fit into to :)

Widied 1

Could always play Cunning to try and replicate Crime Lord for your own benefit.

Widied 1

It would also serve as a second Padme trigger for the other matches

@gunslinger Love this deck, how do you deal with people stalling but not making it obvious?

SinisterSmooth 7

So with the errata essentially making Thrawnkar useless does confidence still have a place here? Or does something like spy net help to up the clock

dj88c 16

`@SinisterSmooth' Honestly, having tried this deck out a bit, Confidence is still an important control card though I'm testing out putting Sound The Alarm in the deck.

Sparetomato 1

I know this is an old decklist, but it came up whilst I was researching mill decks.

@themilkman - Feint with General Rieekan - Defensive Mastermind is brilliant round 1, and if your opponent hasn't taken all of your , a great start for round 2. I wouldn't rely on it though, and late game when one of your characters dies then it becomes less effective for the 1.

The problem with Feint is that this deck isn't usually rolling in money, so you're unlikely to want to pull it off twice in the same turn as you lose access to your better mitigation cards.
